Overview
Prepare for the high demand for audiologists with a Doctor of Audiology degree from St. John's!
St. John's, Adelphi, and Hofstra Universities, three distinguished academic institutions on Long Island, have joined resources to offer a combined Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.). This four-year post-baccalaureate program meets national standards for certification in Audiology. Students are able to utilize the resources of all three schools, including labs, equipment, faculty, and externship sites to earn 86 credits.
The objective of this clinical doctoral program is to produce highly skilled practitioners with the ability to perform the wide variety of diagnostic, remedial, and critical services within the scope of practice for audiologists, which meet the current requirements for certification and practice.
Each doctoral candidate in audiology completes his/her plan of study and takes classes at each of the three schools to earn the Au.D. Each student selects a home university. The home institution maintains student transcripts, provides advisement, and monitors ASHA certification and New York State licensing requirements. The home institution awards the degree, noting that it was completed in conjunction with the two other universities.
Professional licensure and certification requirements often vary from state to state. St. John’s University has not determined requirements for individual states beyond New York. If you reside or plan to reside outside New York you are strongly encouraged to contact the appropriate state licensing agency in that state to seek information and guidance before beginning the program.
The curriculum includes advanced course work in vestibular assessment, hearing aid technology, early intervention, and electrophysiology.Efforts are made to balance the number of course offerings among the three schools. The student takes courses in a lock-step program for the first three years and completes a 1820-hour practicum in the fourth year.

Accreditation
The program’s accreditation period is from February 1, 2021, through January 31, 2029.

Admission
Admission to the Doctor of Audiology is determined by the Audiology Faculty Council, which is composed of faculty and staff from each participating university.
How to Apply
The application is submitted through Adelphi University and requires an official transcript from all schools attended (minimum overall GPA of 3.0), GRE scores (optional), two letters of recommendation, and a 300-word essay describing why the individual wants to pursue a doctoral degree. An interview is required of all students being considered for admission to the program.
Applications are due by February 1 (fall admission only). All applicants to the Doctorate of Audiology doctoral program must apply and submit all admission materials to Adelphi University.

Courses
Advisement
Students’ progress through the program is monitored through academic advising, assessment of educational and clinical performance, and periodic competency based evaluations administered at regular intervals throughout the program.
Graduate Assistantships are available. Assistants have an opportunity to work in the department, the clinic, or with a faculty member. Tasks include supporting faculty research and managing Speech and Hearing Labs. Graduate assistants typically work 10 hours per week.
Scholarship and assistantship awards are applied toward tuition. Graduate Assistantship awards are based on an hourly scale.
Plan of Study
Each post-B.A. student admitted into the Long Island Au.D. Consortium will select a home school. Upon entry into the program, the student will be assigned an advisor and guided through a lock-step plan of study that will delineate specific courses for each year of the four year, 86-credit program. Courses will be offered at all three schools to take advantage of the shared resources and expertise.
Students must complete the academic and clinical requirements and pass two comprehensive exams to be awarded the Au.D., which is granted by the home institution in cooperation with Hofstra and Adelphi Universities.

Graduation
Students will receive a diploma from their home institution upon successful completion of the Au.D. degree requirements. The diploma will note that the degree was awarded in conjunction with the two other universities in the consortium.

Career Outcomes
The program prepares students in four areas of audiology; foundations of practice, prevention in identification, evaluation, and treatment of hearing impairment. The program expects graduates to be clinicians and scholars with a strong understanding of the connection between the scientific basis of the discipline and its clinical practices, and an appreciation for research.
