The Peter J. Tobin College of Business


The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree program in Business provides students with a high-quality business education at St. John’s University. The interdisciplinary program allows students to select seven advanced courses from the major disciplines in the Tobin College of Business as their major. Thus, students are able to create an independent, flexible, yet career-focused major within the B.S. in Business.

Students take advanced courses following the completion of the business core, which serves as prerequisites for advanced level courses in the interdisciplinary major. The interdisciplinary approach to business using our program tracks as a coursework roadmap helps develop career areas of interest that intersect with traditional disciplines, such as real estate, service marketing, analytics, financial advisory, sustainability, and more. 

The B.S. Business is the largest major in Tobin and is its only undergraduate program that is offered fully online. Online learning allows for an extremely flexible learning environment not only taught by faculty who are experts in their field but also are specialists in online delivery that facilitates active learning. The program is also offered at the Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island campuses.

The program offers flexibility for students to participate in one or more of our noteworthy experiential courses and internships that broaden their hands-on business experience.

The program provides faculty and students a shared understanding of the purpose of majoring in business and expectations for graduating seniors to know or to be able to do at the end of their course of study. Assessment of the program’s objectives determine whether students are achieving the outcomes, which include the following:

  • Students are skilled in critical thinking and decision making, as supported by the appropriate use of analytical and quantitative techniques.
  • Students can apply functional area concepts and theories appropriately.
  • Students are effective communicators who can prepare and deliver oral and written presentations using appropriate technologies.
  • Students are sensitive to the ethical requirements of business activities.
  • Students can tackle strategic and organizational challenges with innovative solutions.

Explore the Tracks

The Business Data Science track exposes students to skills that are necessary to make data-driven decisions in business applications. The interdisciplinary major emphasizes data visualization, predictive analytics, big data, and forecasting. The student may extend analytical tools to areas such as econometrics, accounting information systems, FinTech, consumer insights/behavior, and insurance risk analysis. When choosing this track, students will have broad exposure to analytics in the business disciplines.

Accounting Systems are designed to support all accounting functions and activities including auditing, financial accounting and reporting, managerial accounting, and tax reporting activities. The most widely adopted accounting systems technology are auditing and financial reporting applications. When choosing this track, students will learn about the following systems: human resources, data, software, information technology infrastructure, and internal controls.

The entrepreneurship track is designed to help students comprehend and acquire the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to be successful entrepreneurs. Successful entrepreneurs must be skilled in the areas of accounting, management, marketing, law, economics, finance, and taxation. The capstone course emphasizes business planning and strategy. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in our business plan competition. When choosing this track, students will gain tools that increase their success in creating a startup.

Beyond the required business law course of all Tobin students, this track exposes the students to upper division law courses that include Uniform Commercial Code, Employment Law and Legislation, Real Estate Law, Law of Small Businesses and a selection of upper division courses in finance, marketing, and risk management to complement the law track. Students may seek careers in real estate industry and future studies in law.

Students in this track have the opportunity to secure careers in internal audit and risk advisory. The track provides the knowledge base to understand business operations, the necessary controls to mitigate risk, and the appropriate business consulting to improve operations. Students exploring this track will develop an in-depth sense of business operations and acumen. Courses in analytics provide innovative tools for career-ready options. Careers in risk compliance and internal audit advisory are examples of opportunities.

The Service Marketing track provide students with skills that include strategic planning, product, and market planning, pricing, distribution, advertising, promotion, product development and research skills. The student will learn the use of data analytics in making decisions for interacting with customers and market partners. Students may choose courses that expand service marketing to management of service operations in various forms of service industries.

The Sustainability track will provide students with skills to work with companies and communities to develop sustainable processes and strategies that address sustainability issues, and share strategies with management, shareholders, customers, and employees. Students will also learn how to develop corporate strategies and analyze and manage operational or enterprise risks for an organization and recommend ways to control or reduce sustainability risks.

Pathways to Further Specializations

Pathways are cost-efficient programs that provide students the opportunity to advance to a master’s degree or a juris doctorate progressing from the B.S. in Business. Students selecting Pathways to advanced degrees require a separate application and must meet admission standards for that Pathway program. Students should seek early program guidance in anticipation of applying to a Pathway Program. Available Pathways are:*

Fast-Track programs are cost-efficient and time-saving ways to provide students the opportunity to advance to a master’s degree from their B.S. in Business.  Students who select a fast-track into an advanced degree must complete an online application and must meet the admission standards for that graduate program. Students should seek early program guidance from their adviser in anticipation of applying to a Fast-Track Program. Available Fast Track programs for Business major are:

Career Outcomes

Careers in business are the fastest growing according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and are the most in-demand of all careers due to the fact that business is one of the most flexible disciplines available and business skills have a place in nearly every industry. The business major will increase your opportunity for employment and offer room for advancement within business careers.

Because many business careers require similar skill sets, any of the careers described above may naturally lead to another, though some additional training, experience, or education may be required for a smoother transition. The transferable nature of these employment opportunities ensures that any person pursuing a major in business has a number of options for their future employment, which could translate into career security and success.

The Lesley and William Collins Analytics Lab boasts state-of-the-art learning tools including 29 computer workstations. The lab provides access to Bloomberg systems as well as analytic tools, news, stock market information, and financial data to enrich every student’s understanding of the business world.

Drawing on St. John's extensive contacts in New York City's business sector, the Executive-in-Residence Program (EIRP) is a unique feature of the Tobin experience. Guided by leading executives who serve as teachers and mentors, students engage in real-world consulting for actual businesses and non-profit organizations.

The Undergraduate Student-Managed Investment Fund is a highly selective program that gives students hands-on experience with managing a substantial portfolio.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Service-Learning Program has partnered with the Food Bank For New York City for over 10 tax seasons. This Virtual VITA program, believed to be the first among colleges and universities nationwide, is a campus-based tax return preparation site that uses advanced technologies in the preparation of tax returns. Students volunteer as tax preparers, or, for repeat volunteers, as quality reviewers. 

Students gain an academic and professional edge by joining any one of St. John's more than 180 student clubs and organizations. Business-related clubs at Tobin include the following:

  • Sigma Iota Epsilon: The Sigma Chapter of the national honor society in management

Dean’s Honors Program

This elite program offers opportunities for high-achieving undergraduate business students to share their academic journey with fellow scholars in the program. It features enriched curricular activities designed to stimulate intellectual, professional, and personal growth by combining opportunities for career development, global study, research projects with faculty, and academic service-learning.

Students are selected for the program by Tobin faculty. Only the highest performing entering freshman are considered for selection for this prestigious program. 

The Dean’s Honors Program participation requirements include:

  • Enrollment in Dean's Honors-designated courses
  • Participation in a subsidized Global Destination Course
  • Completion of at least one internship course
  • Participation in workshop/speaker/career development activities each semester
  • Maintenance of a 3.5 cumulative GPA, both overall and within student’s major

The benefits of the program are many, notably:

  • Participating students receive funding toward the Tobin Global Destination course
  • Participating students have the option to conduct research with a faculty member within the student’s major
  • Participating students may live with other Honors Program participants in one of the University’s residence halls
  • Participating students get early exposure to and counseling by career services professionals
